Negli spazi dell’ecomuseo troverete storie e voci
che raccontano il rapporto tra Palermo e il mare,
raccontano le trasformazioni di questa città complessa
ma anche la vita e il lavoro di tante persone,
testimonianze di una memoria viva che indicano,
a chi saprà ascoltare, prospettive future.
PERCHÉ VISITARE MARE MEMORIA VIVA?
Mare memoria Viva è il primo museo multimediale
e interattivo di Palermo.
Abbiamo scelto di utilizzare le tecnologie del suono
e dell’immagine, per narrare, con mezzi contemporanei,
un patrimonio ricchissimo e importante della città.
É un primo museo della città. Il rapporto con il mare, infatti,
racconta molto della città che c’era, che c’è e che potrebbe
esserci: ci sono storie di resistenza, di viaggio, di commercio,
di vacanze, di lavoro; ci sono ricordi, foto sbiadite,
luoghi dimenticati, fiabe, cartoline; ci sono naviganti,
portuali, scrittori, poeti, bagnanti, pescatori,
operai dei cantieri navali, capitani e marinai,
gente che va per mare e gente che se lo porta
sempre dentro ovunque sia.

EX DEPOSITO LOCOMOTIVE SANT’ERASMO
La sede principale dell’ecomuseo racconta Storie di mare,
città e comunità e ha disposizione spazi interni ed esterni
per laboratori, incontri e conferenze. Si trova presso l’Ex
deposito locomotive di S. Erasmo, una bellissima struttura di
archeologia industriale situata accanto la foce del fiume Oreto e
appartiene al Comune di Palermo.
ARSENALE DELLA MARINA REGIA
L’ecomuseo ha anche una seconda sede in una delle sale
dell’Arsenale della Marina Regia della Soprintendenza del Mare –
Dipartimento dei Beni culturali e dell’Identità siciliana, in via
dell’Arsenale 142. Si tratta della sede monumentale più antica e
ricca di storia marinara della città; l’ecomuseo racconta qui
Storie di marittimi, porto e cantieri navali.

THE URBAN ECOMUSEUM ‘MARE MEMORIA VIVA’ IS THE RESULT
OF A WORK OF RESEARCH AND COMMUNITY-BUILDING ON THE MEMORY
AND THE PRESENT OF PALERMO’S RELATIONSHIP WITH ITS SEA.
In the spaces of the ecomuseum you will find numerous stories
and voices that narrate not only the relationship between
Palermo and its sea and the transformations of this complex
city, but also the life and the work of many people.
These are the signs of a living memory that indicates the
possibility of the future to those who are able to read them.
WHY VISIT THE ECOMUSEUM ‘MARE MEMORIA VIVA’?
Mare Memoria Viva is the first multimedia
and interactive museum in Palermo.
We have chosen to use multimedia audio-visual technologies
to tell of an incredibly rich and important heritage through
state-of-the-art means. This heritage should be recognised as
widely as possible. We believe that videos, photographs, images
and oral narrations are capable of speaking to all.
Palermo’s relationship to its sea is very telling of the city
that was, that is and that could be. There are stories of
resistance, travel, commerce, holiday and work. There are
memories, faded photographs, forgotten places, fairy-tales and
postcards. Seafarers, dockers, writers, poets, sunbathers, shipworkers,
captains and sailors. People who go out to sea, and
people who carry the sea in them wherever they go.
WHERE IS THE ECOMUSEUM?
EX DEPOSITO LOCOMOTIVE SANT’ERASMO
The main site of the multi-sited ecomuseum narrates The stories
of sea, city and communty and offers both indoor and outdoor
spaces for workshops, meetings and small conferences. It is
located in the former locomotive shed of S. Erasmo, on Via
Messina Marine. Inaugurated in 1886, it is now an elegant
warehouse with a unique and precious structure made of cast
iron, covered by a quadruple pitched roof with skylights.The
indoor space amounts to 1400 m2. There are also outdoor spaces
overlooking the Oreto estuary and the sea.
ARSENALE DELLA MARINA REGIA
The second site of the ecomuseum tells The stories of seamen,
port and shipyards. The ample space on the first floor, where
the ecomuseum is located, can host conferences and temporary
exhibitions. It is located at the Royal Arsenal, built in 1621-
1630 following the project of Palermo-born architect Mariano
Smiriglio, between the city’s port and its shipyards.
It is managed by the Sea Superintendence and it is the oldest
and richest monument testifying Palermo’s maritime history.
